1. Dr. Egide Kalisa Launched the HumekaNeza\u00a0 (Breathe Easier) Campaign in schools in Rwanda. Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution due to their rapid breathing rates, developing respiratory systems, and less mature immune defenses. These factors make them particularly sensitive to the harmful effects of air pollution, highlighting the importance of focusing on this demographic in pollution impact assessments. Chronic exposure to air pollution, especially in educational settings, has been associated with various adverse health outcomes, such as increased respiratory issues, diminished lung function, more frequent school absences, and decreased cognitive abilities. Monitoring bioaerosols using passive air samplers. A team of researchers led by Egide Kalisa, Amandeep Saini, Kevin Lee, Jacob Mastin, Jasmin K. We\u2019re delighted to announce that our core member has been selected for the 2024 Voices for Science trains scientists to communicate the value and impact of Earth and space sciences to key decision-makers, journalists, and public audiences. The program recruits scientists to participate in one of two tracks: policy or communications. The Voices for Science program provides scientists interested in science communications and outreach with specialized training to hone their skills. Throughout the twelve-month program, participants work directly with AGU staff to conduct regular outreach activities with various audiences in their local communities. Dr. Egide Kalisa\u2019s Groundbreaking Study Explores Air and Noise Pollution Impact on Children in Burundi and DRC On 2 April 2024, Dr Egide Kalisa launched an air pollution monitoring programme in two cities of Burundi and DRC. The study will be the first long-term research in these countries to monitor particulate matter air pollution and assess its chemical and Biological components in urban and rural sites of both countries. New HELTH Study: Children in kindergarten and primary schools in Rwanda inhale exhaust fumes from their parents\u2019 vehicles, with the concentration tripling during drop-off and pick-up times. With their tender lungs and faster breathing rates, children are among the most susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution. The proximity of their breathing space to tailpipe vehicle emissions places them at increased risk. In a study conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2012, it was found that roughly 22% of children under the age of five succumbed to respiratory diseases, underlining the gravity of the issue. The National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) extends its warm congratulations to you for receiving the \u201cMost Accomplished Researcher Award\u201d during the \u201cPre-NCST Council Meeting Symposium\u201d held on 18th October 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges Dr Egide Kalisa\u2019s exceptional research contribution to addressing critical societal challenges in Rwanda. Our group specializes in research that spans across five key pillars: Human, Environment, Location, Transport, and Health.Through collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach, our research group strives to address complex challenges at the intersection of these five pillars. By fostering a holistic understanding of the intricate connections between human activities, the environment, spatial dynamics, transportation systems, and health, we aim to generate knowledge that can inform policies, drive innovation, and positively impact society. Egide Kalisa MSc, PhD<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

Egide Kalisa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University of Ontario. Before that, Dr Kalisa was a Research Scientist in the Atmospheric Science and Technology Directorate, Air Quality Division, Environment Canada and Climate Change and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Toronto.  He obtained a Ph.D. in Health and Environmental Science from the Auckland University of Technology and an MSc in Air Pollution Management and Control from the University of Birmingham.  Dr. Kalisa conducted research in Environment and Health in different countries, including Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
