Dear Potential Students

Joining the Human, Environment, Location, Transport & Health Research Group presents numerous opportunities for individuals passionate about contributing to advancements in various critical domains.

Research Assistants

Full Name: Natasha Fortin

Title/ Position: Graduate Student Assistant

Program: MHSc in Global Health Systems Candidate

Research Interests: My research interests are focus on better understanding global health equity and how determinants of health, such as the environment impact individuals differently. Growing up on a farm inspired my interests in learning about the connection between the environment and human health, and the importance of protecting the environment.  I am also interested in the development of frugal devices and creating sustainable solutions for environmental challenges.

Current Project: I am currently working on a literature review and discussion on the health outcomes of air pollution and heatwaves in large and small cities in Canada. This project aims to understand the synergistic effects and broader implications of air pollution and heatwaves and how this environmental events impact health, as well as the understanding the challenges of addressing these issues in Canada and suggesting strategies to mitigate the negative health impacts.

Full Name: Sydney Lessard

Title/Position: Graduate Student Assistant

Program: MHSc Global Health Systems, 1st Year

Research Interests: I am interested in exploring the impact of environmental health and climate change on the well-being of vulnerable populations. I am particularly interested in understanding the effects of climate change on women’s health, including how environmental stressors disproportionately impact maternal and reproductive health outcomes. Additionally, I am interested in the effects of air pollution on child development, examining how early exposure to pollutants influences cognitive, respiratory, and overall health trajectories.

Current Project: I am currently working on a scoping review and research gap analysis focused on the impact of air purifiers in educational settings, assessing their effectiveness in reducing indoor air pollutants. Using established scoping review methodologies, we are synthesizing findings across various regions to identify research trends, limitations, and gaps. Our preliminary analysis indicates a significant lack of studies from African countries, highlighting the need for further research in this context. The findings are expected to contribute to global discussions on air quality in schools and inform future research and policy recommendations.
